Trans-Kyushu Limited Express

The Trans-Kyushu Limited Express a two-car train that takes about 3 hours to run between Kumamoto City and Oita City. While more of a workhorse train than some of Kyushu’s fancy sightseeing trains, the Trans-Kyushu is still quite comfortable, with spacious seating accented with wood trim and large windows to take in the spectacular scenery as you ride through Aso-Kuju National Park.

Highlights

  • the Tateno Station switchback as the train powers its way up into the Aso Caldera
  • the newly reconstructed Aso Ohashi Bridge that replaced the one that collapsed in the 2016 earthquakes
  • the majestic, smoky peaks of Aso, the largest active volcano in Japan
  • the northern side of the outer rim of the caldera that surrounds Aso
  • the statue of Usopp from the One Piece manga/anime at Aso Station
Simple yet comfy
