The Aso Volcano Museum is wrapping up its year-long series marking the 10th anniversary of the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake with a pair of special autumn evening events. Billed as the “climax” of the commemorative program, both nights promise something a little different from the museum’s regular Hoshi no Museum (Star Museum) stargazing sessions that have proven popular with visitors.
First up, on Saturday, October 17, is “Viento Concert with Hoshi no Museum” — an open-air concert experience set against the night sky above Aso. The name “Viento” evokes the wind that sweeps across Aso’s vast grasslands, and the event promises a starlit evening of music drifting through the autumn air.
Then on Saturday, November 28, the museum hosts “Aurora Zanmai with Hoshi no Museum” — a special night built around the theme of auroras and the story of Earth, offering a mysterious and immersive evening experience. While you won’t be able to spot the northern lights from Kyushu, the program is designed to bring that sense of wonder to Aso.
It’s perfect timing to visit: autumn is settling over the Aso region, and the Kusasenri grasslands are already filling with swaying silver pampas grass (susuki), one of Japan’s classic autumn sights. The cool, clear nights at altitude make Aso one of Kyushu’s best spots for stargazing.
