Step Into Kumamon’s World: A New XR Dungeon Adventure Opens in Kumamoto City

Kumamoto’s beloved bear mascot Kumamon is getting his own dungeon — and you’re invited to explore it. Kumamon Dungeon, a new XR (extended reality) attraction, opens on July 1, 2026 on the 2nd floor of SAKURA MACHI Kumamoto in central Kumamoto City. The project is a collaboration between travel giant JTB, Kumamoto Prefecture, and XR technology company ABAL, and is timed to coincide with the launch of the Kumamoto Destination Campaign.

Visitors put on an XR headset and physically walk through an indoor facility while a virtual world unfolds around them — think Kumamoto Castle-inspired stages, surprise missions, and boss battles, all with Kumamon by your side. The experience lasts about 20 minutes and is described as feeling like stepping directly into a video game. As you play, you collect virtual treasures (medals), which you can exchange for coupons redeemable at restaurants and tourist spots around Kumamoto Prefecture — or for Kumamon merchandise. It’s a fun way to combine the attraction with a broader trip around the prefecture. Kumamon Square fans will find this a great addition to their Kumamon itinerary.

SAKURA MACHI Kumamoto is a large shopping and entertainment complex near Kumamoto Station, making it easy to fit into a day of sightseeing. The attraction is open daily, including weekends and public holidays, from 10:00 to 20:00 (last entry 19:30). Walk-ins are welcome, but you can also book in advance through the official website at j-lppf2.jp/kmn-dungeon/.
