As part of the One Piece Kumamoto Reconstruction Project, a series of bronze statues depicting the Straw Hat crew was installed at locations across the prefecture — a tribute to Kumamoto’s recovery after the 2016 earthquakes and a nod to the fact that series creator Eiichiro Oda was born here. Alongside the statues, two lines of collectible miniature figures — the World Collectable Figure – Kumamoto Reconstruction Project – (statue mini figures) and the Kumamoto Collectable Figure (nicknamed Kumakore) — are sold at dedicated shops near each statue. Michi no Eki (道の駅) are Japan’s roadside rest stations — handy pit stops with local produce, food stalls, and restrooms, making them great additions to a day-trip itinerary.
