Aso Kumamoto Airport Wins World’s Best New Terminal at 2026 Skytrax Awards

Aso Kumamoto Airport has taken the top spot in the World’s Best New Airport Terminal category at the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2026, announced on 14 May 2026. The UK-based aviation consultancy Skytrax has run its global airport rankings since 1999, basing results on a large-scale passenger survey conducted online each year — making it one of the most widely recognised benchmarks in the airport industry.

Judges highlighted the terminal’s cleanliness, comfort, and intuitive layout as standout features. For foreign visitors arriving in Kumamoto for the first time, a well-signed, easy-to-navigate terminal can make a real difference — especially when you’re figuring out buses, taxis, and luggage on the fly.

Beyond the category win, the airport also received a 4-Star Airport certification from Skytrax following its first-ever official Star Rating audit. The 4-star designation recognises airports that deliver a strong overall passenger experience across facilities, services, and staff.

The current terminal is relatively new, having opened as part of a major redevelopment project. If you haven’t passed through recently, it’s worth knowing the experience has been significantly upgraded. For visitors heading out to Mt. Aso’s crater or elsewhere in the prefecture, the airport is your likely first impression of Kumamoto — and apparently, a world-class one at that.
