Mt. Aso’s Crater Watch

No matter how many pictures there are of Mt. Aso’s Nakadake crater, nothing captures the aura of the gas plumes, the sheer scale of the volcano, and the otherworldly atmosphere of the black sand beach. Even though it is one of the most accessible volcanic craters in Japan, these same forces of nature also mean that there are times when it is not safe to approach the crater.

As such, it is imperative that you confirm the status of the volcano before going to ensure that you will not be stopped at a checkpoint three-quarters of the way up the mountain!!!

For the most recent information on the crater’s status and whether or not it can be viewed, please check the official website here: https://www.aso-volcano.jp/

A view of the crater from Mt. Sara

At the time of writing, the area around crater is inaccessible due to a tragic accident, and it is currently unknown when the crater will reopen to visitors. We will update this page when such plans are announced.

Our guide showed us the view of Minami Aso with all the gusto of Mufasa

However, this does not mean that visitors cannot enjoy Nakadake. The walkway through the black sand visit is still traversable and even provides access to two hiking trails that give a view of the volcano from a higher angle. My coworker and I were able to climb to the top of Sarayama (sounds cooler than Plate Mountain), which was as breathtaking as it was terrifying. Make sure you are wearing the right kind of shoes and gear if you plan to attempt it though!
