The Aso Sanjo Visitor Center, located inside the Aso Volcano Museum, has hit a landmark 3 million cumulative visitors — and marked the occasion with a ceremony held on August 25, 2026. The milestone guest turned out to be a family visiting all the way from Taiwan, who were presented with a commemorative certificate and special gifts at the event.
The visiting family said they wanted their children to see a real, active volcano up close, and that knowing about the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake made them want to visit as a show of support. They rounded out their day with lunch featuring Aso Akagyu (Aso red beef) — a local specialty well worth trying. Aso City Mayor Matsushima also attended to offer congratulations on behalf of the center’s operating council.
The visitor center opened in March 2019 inside the Aso Volcano Museum as Japan’s first-ever national park visitor center to be operated within a private facility. Established by the Ministry of the Environment as part of the recovery effort following the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, it serves as an information hub for the Aso-Kuju National Park and the Aso UNESCO World Geopark, covering topics ranging from volcanic activity to disaster preparedness and nature conservation. It took until October 2024 to reach 2 million visitors — meaning the jump from 2 to 3 million happened in under a year.
To celebrate the milestone, the museum is running a limited-time admission discount. Admission is discounted from the usual ¥1,300 to just ¥1,000 for adults — but only until the end of August, so don’t wait too long.
