The Ushibuka Summer Lantern Festival 2026 (牛深SUMMERランタンフェスティバル2026) is currently underway at Umi no Eki / Michi no Eki Ushibuka Kaisaikan — a combined seaside station and roadside rest area on the Amakusa coast — and it’s well worth an evening visit before it wraps up on August 16 (Sunday).
From 7 p.m. each night, the venue fills with the warm glow of colorful lanterns arranged along the waterfront. Alongside the lanterns, you’ll find a corridor of wind chimes hand-designed by local elementary school students and a display of pinwheels crafted by middle school students — each one unique, giving the whole event a community-made charm that sets it apart from bigger commercial festivals. The combination of soft light, sea breeze, and the sound of chimes makes for a wonderfully relaxed summer evening. Amakusa kicked off its summer season with beach openings earlier this year, and this lantern festival is a great excuse to head back to the islands for a night out.
The festival is free to stroll through, and the photogenic atmosphere — lanterns reflected on the calm coastal water — means you’ll want to take your time wandering the grounds. It’s an easy outing for families, couples, or anyone looking for a quieter alternative to big city events.
