Taiko Drums and Shochu Under the Castle Stars: A Nightly Cultural Show in Kumamoto

If your evenings in Kumamoto feel like they’re missing something, head to the castle district after dark. Tsuzumi Hibiku Shiro Machi no Utage (“The Castle-Town Feast of Drumbeats”) is a nightly cultural experience running year-round at HAB@, on the third floor of OMO5 Kumamoto by Hoshino Resorts, just a one-minute walk from the Toricho-suji tram stop.

From 8:00 PM, local musicians take the stage for a live wa-taiko (Japanese taiko drum) performance — not the traditional festival kind, but a contemporary, polished arrangement that feels at home in this stylish rooftop setting. Stone lanterns glow, the décor draws on motifs tied to Kumamoto Castle’s history, and the atmosphere sits somewhere between cultural showcase and intimate nightclub. The show runs until 10:00 PM.

Entry is free, and a serving of maewari shochu — Kuma shochu (a local spirit distilled in the Hitoyoshi-Kuma region, one of Japan’s three designated shochu regions) pre-diluted with water to a smooth, mellow strength — is included with admission. Additional drinks and food pairings are available for purchase. It’s an accessible introduction to Kuma shochu even if you’ve never tried it before.

The experience is exclusive to OMO5 Kumamoto and is designed to let you feel the castle town rather than just look at it — a perfect complement to daytime visits to Kumamoto Castle's autumn festival or the illuminations at night. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a longtime resident looking for a new evening out, this is one of the more distinctive things to do in the city after sundown.
