Kumamoto Castle’s Evening Hours and Shiro-Akari Illumination Are Back from October 27

Good news for anyone planning a twilight visit to Kumamoto Castle: evening opening hours and the popular Shiro-Akari illumination have resumed as of October 27, 2026, following a temporary suspension caused by Typhoon 30. Operators confirmed the resumption after completing safety checks on the lighting equipment.

The castle grounds are open on evening sessions with a last entry at 8:00 PM and full closure at 9:00 PM. If you were hoping to catch the castle glowing after dark, now is your chance — the autumn atmosphere makes for a particularly atmospheric visit.

The Shiro-Akari light installation is a moving illumination event marking a decade of recovery from the 2016 earthquake, casting the castle’s stone walls and towers in a warm, shifting glow. It’s one of the more memorable ways to experience Kumamoto Castle this autumn, and well worth timing your visit for after sunset.

The broader autumn castle festival runs through November 1 and includes traditional performing arts and other special programming alongside the nighttime illumination — so there’s plenty of reason to make an evening of it.
