Kumamoto Flower Expo 2026: Illuminated Tunnels and Bamboo Light Art Across the City

Kumamoto City is blossoming this November with the Kumamoto Flower Expo 2026 (くまもと花博2026), a city-wide floral festival running from November 20 (Friday) to November 29 (Sunday). The expo is free to attend and spread across several areas of the city, making it a great excuse to explore neighbourhoods you might not otherwise visit.

The star attraction is the ever-popular Flower Tunnel, a canopy of blooms that has drawn crowds in previous years. This year it gets an after-dark upgrade: nighttime illumination transforms the tunnel into a completely different — and arguably more magical — experience than its daytime look. Whether you pass through at noon or after sunset, it’s worth a visit at both.

New for 2026, the Art Trail moves to Hakeinomiya Park (八景水谷公園), located in the northern part of the city near the Suizenji and Ezu Lake area. The highlight here is a bamboo light installation (竹あかり) — a traditional Japanese craft form where patterns cut into bamboo cylinders cast intricate glowing designs when lit from within. It’s a striking way to experience the park in the evening.

The expo covers two main zones: the Machinaka Area (街なかエリア, the downtown city centre) and the Machiyama Area (まちやまエリア). Between the flower tunnel, the bamboo illuminations, and the outdoor settings, there’s plenty to fill an afternoon and evening.
