Hino Kuni Matsuri 2026: Kumamoto’s Biggest Summer Festival Returns for Its 49th Year

Mark your calendars: the 49th Hino Kuni Matsuri (火の国まつり, literally “Fire Country Festival”) has been officially announced, running over three days — Friday, July 31 through Sunday, August 2, 2026. One of Kumamoto’s largest and most beloved summer matsuri (traditional Japanese festivals), Hino Kuni Matsuri fills the city’s streets with dancers, music, and a sense of community pride that is hard to match anywhere else in Kyushu.

This year carries extra meaning. The theme — “Sasaerareta hibi wo, sasaeiau chikara ni” (「支えられた日々を、支え合う力に。」), roughly “Turning the days we were supported into the strength to support one another” — reflects the 10th anniversary of the April 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake. The devastating quake left deep marks on the city and prefecture, and this festival serves as both a celebration of how far Kumamoto has come and a tribute to everyone — locals and people around the world — who helped in the recovery.

If you have never been to a Japanese summer matsuri before, Hino Kuni Matsuri is a fantastic introduction. Expect large group dance processions through the city centre, taiko drumming, yukata (summer kimono) worn by participants and visitors alike, festival food stalls, and an atmosphere that brings the whole city together. For foreign visitors and residents, it is the kind of event that stays with you long after you leave Kumamoto. Details beyond the dates have not yet been released — the organizers have confirmed that event information will be updated progressively on the official Kumamoto City Tourism Guide website (kumamoto-guide.jp). Keep an eye on that page and on Kumamoto.guru as more details, such as parade routes, stage schedules, and access information, are announced closer to the event.
